About
Bachelor Ascent runs three separate clockwise loops out of the West Village staging area at the Mt. Bachelor ski area, twenty minutes west of Bend in the Deschutes National Forest. The first loop summits the volcano at about 9,000 feet, up the east side and down the west; the second circles it; the third climbs to Pine Marten Lodge and back. Daybreak Racing, which also puts on the Hood Hundred and Backcountry Rise, runs it.
The 50K covers 31.0 miles with 6,800 feet of climbing and the same in descent, on everything from smooth dirt singletrack to steep volcanic rock. A 28K, a 16K and a vertical 5K run the same day. The race carries a $10,000 prize purse for the 50K.
Course
Three loops from West Village, each returning to the same staging area, with five aid stations. Loop one summits Mt. Bachelor at about 9,000 feet and comes down the west side; loop two circumnavigates the volcano clockwise; loop three is a mid-mountain loop to Pine Marten Lodge. The finish is at 31.0 miles with 6,800 feet of climbing. Pacers are not allowed and poles are.
