About
Tillamook Burn runs in the Tillamook State Forest west of Portland, on the creekside trails and long forested climbs between Reehers Camp and the Wilson River. The name is the forest's own: a series of wildfires between 1933 and 1951 burned most of it, and what runners cross now is the replanted forest that came back.
The 50 miler runs on the Saturday, point to point from Smith Homestead near the Jones Creek Day Use area to Reehers Camp, 50.6 miles with 9,500 feet of climbing. The 55K runs on the Sunday as a loop out of Reehers Camp, 35.6 miles with 6,900 feet. Both are staged from the same camp, and Daybreak Racing runs them.
Course
The trails are rolling and hilly on generally soft dirt with good footing, broken by technical sections of rock and root and by long climbs and descents. Runners cross many small streams and pass several waterfalls, with miles of remote creekside trail.
The 50 miler has seven aid stations, the first of them a self-serve hydration point with no staff. The 55K has five. Both are cupless. The 50 miler's shuttle to the start is optional; runners may be dropped off at Jones Creek Day Use and walk up instead.
