Siuslaw Dunes

Siuslaw Dunes runs through the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area on the central Oregon coast, the largest stretch of coastal sand dunes in North America. The 50K is mostly point to point: runners ride a shuttle from Honeyman State Park, three miles south of Florence, to the start at Waxmyrtle Campground, and race back north over open dunes, forested singletrack and remote ocean beach to the East Woahink day-use area in the park. It covers 31.0 miles with about 2,100 feet of climbing.

A 20 miler and a 12K run the same morning. Daybreak Racing, whose race directors grew up in Florence, puts it on, and the event raises money for Siuslaw High School's cross country and track programs.

Sand is the story. The course switches between open dunes, sandy trail, beach and forested singletrack every mile or two, and the dunes run firmer after steady rain and looser when it has been dry. Most of the climbing comes on a forested loop in the middle of the race. There are four aid stations, at miles 6.6, 15.5, 21.4 and 27.1, with on-course cutoffs at the last three.
