About
Quest for the Crest runs every May out of Burnsville, North Carolina, over the Black Mountain crest and across Mount Mitchell, the highest point east of the Mississippi. The 50K is the only ultra on the weekend; a 25K and an 11K run alongside it.
The 50K is called a 50K and is not one. The organiser puts it at about 34.5 miles with 12,000 feet of climbing and the same amount of descent, in four big climbs, point to point, with a 15-hour limit. Its own words for what that means are blunt: "This is a beautiful HIKE up and jog down over boulders kind of 'run'. Whatever your PR is for said distance... double it and then some." 22 of the 120 starters did not finish in 2026, and the winning time was 8:01:44 for a race most fields would run in five hours.
Entry is first-come sign-up on UltraSignup. It is not a Western States 100 qualifier.
Course
The 50K is point to point. Runners reach the start only on a mandatory shuttle from the finish at Neal's Creek Field, because the start sits on private roads in a neighbourhood the race can use only under permit, and crews and spectators are barred from it. The course climbs to Bowlens Creek, drops to Colbert's Creek Road at mile 18, then climbs again through Buncombe to the summit of Mount Mitchell at mile 27 before a 9.5-mile run to the finish. The organiser's own chart totals 34.00 miles; its UltraSignup listing says about 34.5.
There is no piped water on part of the course. Three of the stops are springs, and every 50K runner has to carry a filter and know how to use it, along with two litres of capacity, a space blanket and a whistle, all checked at packet pickup. The race is cupless. It warns that a rescue can take twelve hours and that the trail involves scrambling on all fours with drops beside it.
How to register
Entry is first-come sign-up on UltraSignup, with no lottery and no qualifying standard for the 50K. Entry for 2027 opens on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern. The organiser publishes no field cap for the race as a whole; the only limit it states is 100 places in the 50K's optional 4:00 a.m. early start, which is meant for runners who would otherwise miss the cutoff and which carries no placing awards. The 11K, which is not an ultra, does have an entry standard: runners have to show a 2,000-foot single climb done in under three and a half hours.
