About
The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc circles the Mont Blanc massif counterclockwise from Chamonix, crossing into Italy at Col de la Seigne, passing Courmayeur, entering Switzerland over the Grand Col Ferret, and returning to France for the finish on the streets of Chamonix. About 174 kilometers with nearly 10,000 meters of climbing, it is the final of the UTMB World Series and the most watched trail race in the world.
The race starts on Friday evening of the last week of August, sending runners into two nights for all but the very front of the field. The town-square finishes, packed aid stations, and mountain passes lined with spectators give it an atmosphere closer to a Tour de France stage than a typical ultra.
Course
A counterclockwise loop of the Mont Blanc massif: out of Chamonix into Italy over Col de la Seigne, past Courmayeur, into Switzerland over the Grand Col Ferret, and back to France for the street finish in Chamonix. Ten major climbs and two nights out for most of the field.
How to register
Entry requires Running Stones, earned by finishing UTMB World Series races, which buy tickets in the December lottery. Elite entry goes by UTMB Index. Demand far exceeds the roughly 2,300 spots, so most runners accumulate stones across a season or two before drawing in.
