About

Zugspitz Ultra Trail by UTMB circles the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, through Bavaria and Tyrol, and every race finishes in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The ZUT100 is billed as the first alpine 100-mile race around the mountain. It starts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen at 8 p.m. on the Thursday and covers 167 km with 8,205 m of climbing on a limit of 42 hours 30 minutes. It goes through Grainau and over the border to Ehrwald, Mieming, Leutasch and the Gaistal, comes back by Biberwier, Ehrwald and Leutasch to Mittenwald, and finishes through Vordergraseck and the Wetterstein.

The Ultratrail is the classic loop around the Zugspitze, 107 km with 5,280 m from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Ehrwald Trail (86 km, 4,295 m) starts in the Austrian village of Ehrwald and joins the main route after a short warm-up. The Leutasch Trail (68.5 km, 3,100 m) starts in Leutasch and joins the Ultratrail course after 6 km, with a big climb at each end, the Scharnitzjoch early and the Osterfelder late. The ZUT100 and the Ultratrail are Western States 100 qualifiers.

Course

The organiser gives the ZUT100 two ways: 167 km and 8,205 m on its race banner, and about 164 km with more than 8,300 m in its course description. The weekend's Mittenwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Grainau trails are shorter than an ultra.

How to register

Entry for 2027 is by lottery for the first time, open from October 5, 2026 at 2 p.m. to October 12 at 2 p.m., with the results on October 14. Runners can enter alone or as a team of two to five. Places handed back are drawn again among the waiting list on October 21, and anything left after that goes on general sale from October 27. A runner who loses the draw two editions running gets a place in the third, and the ZUT100 asks for a UTMB Index in the 100K or 100M category.
