About
Pacific Trails California by UTMB runs across Rancho San Fernando Rey, a private cattle ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley, inland from Santa Barbara, that dates back to the Mexican land-grant era and is rarely open to visitors. The 50K starts at 7 a.m. on the Saturday and covers 51 km with 1,550 m of climbing on a 10-hour limit, mostly on old ranch roads and wagon tracks, with stretches of singletrack through oak canyons and up onto the ridgetops. A 25K runs on the Sunday.
The 2025 race never started. An atmospheric river dropped more than 13 inches of rain on the ranch shortly before race weekend, on a scale it had not seen since 1965, and the organiser called the event off. The 2026 50K is sold out.
Course
The 50K starts and finishes at an open barn on the ranch, which is also the race's base camp, and passes Redrock, Loma Alta, Old Man Mountain, Santa Cruz, Cow Camp, Boot Hill and Horse Canyon. There is a cutoff at Cow Camp, about 34 km in, and the finish closes at 5 p.m.
How to register
Entries are sold on the race's site, and the 2026 50K is sold out, including its charity places. Online registration closes on Sunday, November 8, 2026, entries are non-refundable and non-transferable, and a one-time deferral to the next year is available until October 15, 2026.
