About
Mountain Ultra Trail by UTMB, known as MUT, starts and finishes in George in the Western Cape, in the Outeniqua Mountains above the Garden Route. The MUT Miler starts at noon on the Friday and covers 168 km with 8,014 m of climbing on a 50-hour limit. It opens with the vertical kilometre to George Peak and an out-and-back to Cradock Peak, drops by Cradock Pass, climbs Keurkop and runs the Dragon's Back ridge to the Outeniqua Pass, then crosses into the Klein Karoo fynbos at Camphersklof before Montagu Pass and the Dizzy Heights climb. From there it crosses the Kaaimans River to the Groenkop Nature Reserve, runs down to the beaches at Wilderness, and comes back past the Garden Route Dam, Tierkop and Tonnelbos to George.
The MUT 100 (100 km, 4,717 m) takes the same core without the peaks or the beach and starts with Cradock Pass, the biggest climb of its route. The MUT 60 (58 km) is the original MUT route, over Cradock Pass, Montagu Pass and Dizzy Heights. From 2027 the Miler and the MUT 100 are Western States 100 qualifiers.
Course
The Miler closes at 2 p.m. Sunday, the MUT 100 at 6 a.m. Sunday and the MUT 60 at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The organiser says the Miler's aid stations and official route data are still to be confirmed for 2027. The weekend's MUT Marathon (43 km), Challenge and Lite are shorter than an ultra.
