About

Kodiak Ultra Marathons by UTMB is the UTMB World Series Major in Southern California, run out of Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains over the second weekend of October. The 100 Mile starts at the Rim Nordic Ski Area at 1 p.m. on the Friday and climbs 16,000 ft over 100.3 miles, topping out near 10,000 ft on Sugarloaf Mountain, on a 36-hour limit. The 100K and 50K start from the Village of Big Bear Lake on the Saturday morning, and every race finishes there.

Entry is first come, first served, and all three ultras sold out for 2026. As a Major the race carries more Running Stones than most of the series, and the 100 Mile and 100K both count as Western States 100 qualifiers.

Course

The 100 Mile is a point-to-point from Rim Nordic to the Village, running through Camp Whittle, Doble Camp, Cactus Flats and twice over Sugarloaf before Bear Mountain and Snow Summit; cutoffs sit at Camp Whittle, Doble, Cactus Flats, Sugarloaf, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. The 100K is an out-and-back from the Village to the Sugarloaf summit and back over Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, and the 50K loops from the Village over Snow Summit to Bluff Lake and Camp Osito. The race states the 100 Mile in miles and feet and the shorter races in kilometres and metres. The 100 Mile's 2026 chart re-measures the course from 2025, dropping the Holcomb Valley aid station and adding Van Dusen.

How to register

Registration is a direct sale on the race's site, first come, first served, and the race keeps no waiting list. Online entry closes the Sunday before the race or when a distance sells out, and the expo takes walk-up entries for any distance still open; there is no race-day registration. The 2026 ultras all sold out.
