Grand Raid des Pyrénées

One of France's biggest mountain-ultra festivals, in the Vallée d'Aure of the Pyrenees: five ultras over four days, from the 174 km Ultra Tour down to the 53 km Tour du Bastan.

Two course changes in the Vallée d'Aure, published before the start and affecting the Ultra Tour, the Tour des Cirques and the Tour des Lacs. The descent from the Col de Portet to the Pont de Bayul now goes by Espiaube, the Crête de Coudet and Lias, the line the Tour du Bastan and the Tour du Moudang already take, and the last kilometre into Vielle-Aure takes 200 metres of road before rejoining the Neste. The race gives outside constraints as the reason and leaves its published distances and climbs unchanged. The Tour du Moudang and the Tour du Bastan run their normal courses.

About

The Grand Raid des Pyrénées is one of the largest mountain-ultra festivals in France, based in the Vallée d'Aure in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Five of its races are ultras, and all of them cross the high cirques and passes of the central Pyrenees. The Ultra Tour covers about 174 km with 10,400 metres of climbing and the Tour des Lacs about 80 km with 5,100 metres, both out of Vielle-Aure; the Tour des Cirques about 125 km with 7,000 metres and the Tour du Moudang about 60 km with 3,500 metres, both from Piau-Engaly; and the Tour du Bastan about 53 km with 3,000 metres, from the Pla d'Adet above Saint-Lary.

They go on three different mornings. The Tour du Moudang leaves first, at 5:30 a.m. on the Thursday, and the Tour du Bastan follows at 7:00 a.m.; both close at 10:30 that night. The Ultra Tour starts at 5:00 a.m. on the Friday with a 50-hour limit and the Tour des Cirques at 7:00 a.m. with 41 hours, and the Tour des Lacs goes last, at 5:00 a.m. on the Saturday with 25 hours. The Ultra Tour and the Tour des Cirques are Western States 100 qualifiers, under 48 hours and under 40.

Course

High cirques and passes of the central Pyrenees, out of the Vallée d'Aure. The Ultra Tour, about 174 km with 10,400 metres of climbing, starts at 5:00 a.m. Friday from Vielle-Aure with a 50-hour cutoff, and the Tour des Cirques, about 125 km with 7,000 metres, at 7:00 a.m. the same morning from Piau-Engaly with 41 hours. The Tour des Lacs, about 80 km with 5,100 metres, starts at 5:00 a.m. Saturday from Vielle-Aure with 25 hours. The Tour du Moudang, about 60 km with 3,500 metres, and the Tour du Bastan, about 53 km with 3,000 metres, both run on the Thursday and both close at 10:30 that night, the Moudang from Piau-Engaly at 5:30 a.m. and the Bastan from the Pla d'Adet at 7:00 a.m.

How to register

Entry is by draw: the race states that every race except the 160 relay is subject to a tirage au sort, at one euro a pre-registration, with groups of up to ten drawn together. The three longest also carry a points gate that no waiver can lift, needing 130 effort points for the Ultra Tour, 95 for the Tour des Cirques and 65 for the Tour des Lacs, earned at one point per kilometre plus one per 100 metres of climb and on a single race rather than a total. The Tour du Moudang and the Tour du Bastan have no points requirement. The festival also runs the Ultra Tour as a relay and two more races in the low forties.
