About
Kettle Moraine has run in the Southern Kettles since 1996, when Kevin and Kris Setnes started it, and it's always on the second Saturday of June. The 100 mile starts at 6:00 a.m. from the Nordic Trailhead outside Whitewater and has 30 hours, which is also the Western States qualifying standard. The 100K starts from the same place at 7:00 a.m. The 50K starts at 1:00 p.m. at the Scuppernong aid station and runs point to point back to Nordic.
The course is two out-and-back sections, about 80 percent wooded, with the rest through prairie and marsh. The 100K and 50K run on aid-station cutoffs rather than a finish limit: a 100K runner can stay out until the race ends at noon on Sunday as long as they leave the New North Horseriders station by its close. A 100-miler who stops at 100K gets a finisher award but is not ranked in the 100K. A non-competitive 38-mile fun run goes out any time after 5:00 p.m. on the Saturday and also finishes by noon Sunday.
Course
Two out-and-back sections from the Nordic Trailhead, about 80 percent wooded and the rest prairie and marsh. Since 2020 the course has bypassed Emma Carlin at the Department of Natural Resources' request and uses a loop in McMiller in place of the old Scuppernong loop. The 50K runs one way from Scuppernong to Nordic.
How to register
Entry is by lottery on UltraSignup, with registration open through December and the draw on January 1, done in batches; anyone not drawn goes on the wait list, and you aren't charged until you accept a place. For 2026 the early prices were $336 for the 100 mile, $205 for the 100K and $169 for the 50K. The 2027 lottery hasn't been posted yet.
