About
The HURT100, put on by the Hawaiian Ultra Running Team, runs five 20-mile loops through the rainforest of the Honolulu Mauka Trail System, in the mountains above the city. The footing is the whole point: roots, mud, and stream crossings on 99 percent single-track, with about 23,750 feet of climbing and the same in descent across the hundred miles. It first ran in 2001 with eight finishers, and the finish rate has stayed low ever since.
The race starts at 6:00 a.m. on a Saturday in mid-January and holds a 36-hour limit. The field is capped near 100 and filled by lottery application, and a finish counts as a Western States 100 qualifier.
