About
The Bighorn Trail Run fills a June weekend in the Bighorn Mountains of northern Wyoming with four races, and the 100-mile is the anchor: an out-and-back from the mouth of Tongue River Canyon near Dayton to the Jaws Trailhead turnaround at 8,800 feet and back, with over 20,500 feet of ascent, 76 of its miles on single-track, and a 35-hour cutoff. There are 52-, 32-, and 18-mile races on the same trails.
The event began in 1993, started by local trail runners working to protect the Dry Fork and Little Bighorn River canyons from a proposed hydroelectric project, and the 100-mile was added in 2002. It finishes in Scott Park in Dayton, and a finish counts as a Western States 100 qualifier.
Course
An out-and-back from Tongue Canyon Road near Dayton (4,275 feet) to the Jaws Trailhead turnaround at mile 48 (8,800 feet), returning to Scott Park in Dayton: 76 miles of single-track, 16 of jeep trail, and 8 of gravel road, with over 20,500 feet of ascent. The 100 starts at 9:00 a.m. Friday and closes at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, 35 hours.
